Learning social skills is important for everyone. The study of martial art can help teach these skills in surprising ways.
Martial art
There is a longstanding and deeply rooted misconception about the martial arts that I will address at the outset. It is not our goal, nor that of any responsible teachers of martial art, to teach our students to fight. We do instruct in the ways of self defense and that does include the ability to defend oneself, but the purpose of our school is more diverse and we believe, more important than that.
There are many of life’s important lessons to be learned from studying martial art. Most of them are rarely thought of in those terms because they are not skills that people associate with the martial arts. What they do not understand and one of the things we teach is that to be a student of martial arts, is to be a student of the art of self-knowledge. At Changing Lives Martial Arts, we instill in our students of all ages, the importance of respect and self-discipline. We have been helping to develop better citizens and better people here in the Virginia Beach area for 20 years. In that time, we have received numerous honors as "Best of the Best" in martial art training and "Best of the Beach" for the highest quality in martial arts
So, what can we offer you or your children that can help to refine social skills through the study of martial art? First and foremost is respect. No student of the martial arts can progress without an understanding of this essential attribute. It can be humbling the first time that a successful middle-aged executive must ask for direction from, or defer to a boy or girl who is younger than his own children are. Martial art instructs us that knowledge comes from those who possess it regardless of age or any other consideration. We learn from those who know more than we do and respect them for their knowledge.
Martial art teaches self-esteem and self-confidence. By learning to control our emotions and to think before we act, we become more skilled at allowing others to participate in our lives. We lose the need to prove ourselves because we learn to feel secure and comfortable with whom we are. What our students accomplish as they achieve this creates confidence in their abilities to overcome difficulties. Our martial arts students become better listeners and partners.
Martial art teaches courtesy, another essential life skill. Higher ranking students and instructors are afforded the regard that their knowledge demands. New students and lower ranks deserve support and help. We all started at the beginning and we remember how much that courtesy meant to us in the beginning.
If you want your children to learn discipline and respect, if you want them to have the ability to defend themselves, or if achieving self-confidence is your goal; then there is no better way than martial art training.
